The caption “Garda D.O.P.” may be included on labels only by producers of the industry that comply with production regulations and the related control program.
All products that are put on the market as Garda DOP extra virgin olive oil must show the numbered identification mark, which allows to trace back the history ad origin of the product.
Identification marks aren’t new to Garda olive oil, in fact they existed already in 1200. This was because the quality and therefore the high price that it managed to reach, already in those days, created the urge for controls and protection.
Identification marks we called “Sigillum Comunis Veronae” and had to go with the oil for export.
There were also those appointed by the “Podestà” and the “Capitano del Popolo” who had to control and register in writing every year the amounts of olives and oil owned by each person and by each community of the Garda area.
Furthermore sales, were controlled by an official who was specifically, the Superstes oley, the superintendent of oil.
